Snowpack

Only glaciers above approximately 3200 m were covered by a mostly continuous snowpack. Since mid-July, there have been repeated but light snowfalls at the highest elevations of the high mountains. It cannot be ruled out that weak layers were buried, especially on glaciers. Elsewhere, weak layers may exist within the fresh and wind-drifted snow. These are expected to stabilize over the next few days.

Outlook

On Tuesday, another 5 to 15 cm of snow is expected in the east in showers above about 2400 m. Skies will clear from the west, and it will remain mostly sunny on the southern flank of the Alps. The north wind will ease. The danger of dry avalanches will gradually decrease at higher elevations. On steep grassy slopes, wet snow slides are to be expected. These may become larger in areas with significant recent snowfall.

On Wednesday, the weather will be partly sunny. The freezing level will rise towards 3200 m. The danger of dry avalanches will continue to decrease, but only slowly in the highest regions of the high mountains. With sunshine and warming, wet snow slides will remain possible, even at high altitudes.
