In sintesi

Glide avalanches are the main concern for Turnagain Pass. These are very big avalanches that release spontaneously, so it is important to avoid spending any time under open glide cracks. It is unlikely a person will trigger an avalanche failing within the snowpack, although there may still be isolated pockets of unstable snow in steep, wind loaded terrain.

    For the past few weeks we have been monitoring the ongoing glide avalanche cycle that continues to impact high-use areas in the Turnagain and Summit Lake zones. These avalanches are very large, and their timing is impossible to predict. Although we have no idea when they might release, in most cases we have the benefit of knowing exactly where they may happen. You can identify suspect slopes by looking for the telltale 'brown frown', or possibly a crumpled, wrinkly texture where the snowpack is slowly creeping downslope. Be on the lookout for open glide cracks, and avoid spending any time below them whenever possible.  We saw multiple glide avalanches release  on Sunburst in the middle of the week, and have been able to track active glide cracks on the move from some of our webcams.  If your route requires traveling under an open glide crack, be sure to give it as much space as possible, travel quickly, and only expose one person at a time to the hazard.

    For those of you are trying to get into steeper alpine terrain, keep in mind there is always a chance of finding an unstable of pocket of wind-loaded snow in isolated steep alpine terrain. Although it is unlikely a person will be able to trigger an avalanche failing closer to the surface of the snowpack, this chance is never zero. It is early in the season and there is still plenty of big terrain that hasn't been explored. Keep this extra layer of uncertainty in the back of your mind if you are thinking about bigger terrain.
