In sintesi

It will be possible to trigger an avalanche in wind blown snow today, and in wet surface snow once temperatures warm. Avoid steep slopes where wind blown snow is deep enough to cause a large avalanche, or in terrain that would be consequential in even a small avalanche. As the day progresses, some wind sheltered slopes could get warm enough for wet loose avalanches.

New snow between March 30 and April 1 was accompanied by 100+ MPH southwest winds. Wind direction has shifted to the east, creating complex redistribution patterns. With a full compass rose of wind slabs near and above treeline, use visual and tactile clues to avoid wind loaded slopes in steep and consequential terrain. Old snow surfaces are fast and firm, creating an efficient bed surface for wind slabs - and the potential for slippery travel and long falls where new snow has been scoured away by winds.

Some slopes may become warm enough for unstable wet surface snow. Yesterday’s east wind prevented widespread warming, but isolated slopes did become wet in the afternoon. Today is forecast to be slightly warmer and slightly calmer than yesterday. Use caution on sunny and wind sheltered slopes if the surface snow has become wet.

Avalanche Discussion

Don’t let complacency lull you into an avalanche accident today. After several weeks of spring diurnal conditions, it would be easy to stop packing your thinking cap. End your season strong and healthy by remaining vigilant during dynamic spring conditions.
