Triggering an avalanche 2 - 3 feet thick remains likely today in steep, rocky areas. You’re most likely to trigger one of these slabs on steep, upper-elevation slopes - particularly those exposed to the wind. Avalanches may be triggered remotely from below, to the sides, and above steeper terrain.

    You may find triggerable slabs 1-3 feet deep along ridgelines in high-elevation exposed terrain. Cornices, pillows, and textured surfaces are all good indicators of wind-transported snow and should be given plenty of space. Watch for signs of instability such as shooting cracks and remember, winds can load and cross-load any aspect given their direction and speed. New snow over the past few days was found to be stable in many areas but giving it another day to settle is a good idea.

    Since the beginning of February, multiple storms have gradually loaded a weak, faceted snowpack. The largest brought 18 - 22” of snow with 1 - 1.3” of water over the past 3 days. The weight of this new snow increased the likelihood of triggering an avalanche on a buried persistent weak layer. This is especially likely in areas where winds have drifted new snow, increasing stress on the snowpack. The new snow also buried the deeper weak layers further from the surface, making it stubborn to triggering. Time will tell if these layers are dormant or just stubborn.

    The primary persistent weak layer of concern is a thin layer of surface hoar and facets buried on February 2nd. On average, this layer is now covered in 2-4 feet of snow and is primarily found on east, north, and west-facing slopes. These avalanches may be triggered remotely from below, above, and to the side and may propagate in unexpected ways. Steep slopes and those affected by wind are places where the weak layer may be closer to the surface and possibly more sensitive. This weak layer was not very widespread and appears to be rounding.

Avalanche Discussion

Today looks like it will be a beautiful day. Today is a good day to communicate with other groups. It's a Saturday on a holiday weekend with lots of fresh snow, so expect to see some crowds out there. On days like today, it can be easy to let our excitement run wild. Take the time to regroup with riding partners, discuss plans, and evaluate safety margins. Remember that we just wrapped up a large loading event and the snowpack needs time to adjust. With how variable the snowpack is across the area, taking the time to investigate the snow and talk to other groups will help in your decision-making process. 

Over the past 3 days, the Togwotee forecast zone has received 18 - 22” of new snow. As the storm moves out from the area today, we will get a better idea of how this new snow is bonding to the snowpack. Yesterday's reports indicated little avalanche activity, but that does not mean conditions will be the same today. A D2 avalanche was reported on a western aspect of Two Ocean yesterday. One of the red flags for avalanches is recent avalanche activity, so stay vigilant of terrain near and far. This practice can help you avoid getting into trouble.
