In sintesi

Avalanche conditions will be increasingly dangerous throughout the day as new snow accumulates and winds increase. By this afternoon, avalanches may be easy to trigger and could occur naturally. Use careful route finding in steep terrain to avoid the hazard. If you are seeing blowing snow, or finding snow that is deeper than the top of your boot, the hazard is increasing and you could trigger an avalanche.

    Older wind slabs, that vary in size and sensitivity, are scattered across middle and upper elevations on northwest, north, northeast, east, southeast and south aspects. It is possible to find and trigger an old wind slab capable of burying a person. New snow today will hide these and careful snowpack assessment will be the best way to identify and avoid this hazard.

    As new snow accumulates and winds increase this afternoon, it may be easy to trigger a wind slab within the new snow. The most likely place to find these new wind slabs will be at the top of start zones on northwest, north, northeast, east, southeast and south aspects. Blowing snow, increasing winds, and shifting wind direction are all indicators of the avalanche hazard increasing and steep terrain should be avoided.

    New low-density snow will accumulate on all aspects throughout the day today. As snow accumulation increases, the likelihood of triggering an avalanche will increase. At lower elevations where there is limited snowpack, these may be more of a Dry Loose avalanche hazard. At middle and upper elevations, new snow will likely form a more cohesive slab large enough to injure or bury a person.

Avalanche Discussion

Today’s hazard will start more as a MODERATE danger rating, given the old, stubborn wind slabs that exist in many areas. Low density snow is forecast to begin mid morning falling on light winds. However, as the snow starts to accumulate and winds increase and shift direction this afternoon, the avalanche hazard is expected to rise to CONSIDERABLE with natural avalanches possible and human triggered avalanches likely. 

The onset of increased avalanche danger is uncertain. If snowfall rates are heavier and winds increase earlier in the storm, the danger will increase earlier in the day. The best way to avoid the avalanche hazard is to pay close attention to winds and snow totals. If you are seeing blowing snow, feeling winds increase or seeing a rapid onset of new snow, the avalanche hazard is rising and steep terrain should be avoided.
