In sintesi

Mostly stable conditions exist, and large avalanches are unlikely. Wet snow avalanches are possible if the sun stays out longer than expected this morning. If you're sinking into a mushy snowpack, stick to gentler slopes or find cooler snow to ride.

Afternoon cloud cover and cooler air will reduce the chance of wet snow avalanches. That said, the snowpack will take a bit of time to solidify after days resembling a bowl of oatmeal.

Last night's freeze likely formed a formidable surface crust but under it, it's still a soggy mess. If the sun lingers longer than expected, these surface crusts may break down and you may find yourself sinking into slush.

Although likely to be small, these wet slides could easily sweep you off your feet or drag you somewhere you don't want to go. The consequences of being caught are amplified in areas above terrain traps like gullies, creek, or river bottoms.

Avalanche Discussion

The avalanche danger is back to LOW and it looks like we could be here for a while. Thankfully, meltwater production should slow as cloud cover increases and a cooler air mass moves into the region this afternoon. These factors will help the snowpack re-freeze and we should be in the clear by tomorrow morning.

While we didn't see any wet avalanches that were particularly large, I can't recall a time (in my last 6 seasons here) that I've seen this many small wet avalanches right near Hailey and Ketchum. The drought and thin snow cover turned the snowpack down here to a pile of sand. Multiple days of hot weather, sun, and a little rain turned the snowpack to mush and we've observed countless wet loose avalanches in the last few days.
