    Winds have increased significantly from the southeast overnight and started slowly moving around the compass to the north. Shifting winds have plenty of soft snow available to redistribute onto leeward slopes. You could trigger consequential slab avalanches on many aspects today. The areas of greatest concern will be the leeward sides of ridgelines, confined alpine couloirs, and cross-loaded gullies. Blowing snow, growing cornices, and recent avalanches will point to the most dangerous slopes. Shooting cracks in stiffer, textured surface snow means you’ve found unstable wind slabs. Stick to lower-angled slopes and sheltered terrain to limit your exposure.

    Up to 13" of low-density snow fell during Wednesday’s storm with surprisingly light winds. While yesterday’s sun has likely crusted over solar aspects, very cold temperatures overnight have kept settlement minimal. Today’s loose snow avalanches may be more difficult to trigger than yesterday’s. They’ll still have consequences if you get pushed around by moving snow above a terrain trap or in very steep, wind-sheltered terrain. Use caution on extreme, confined terrain features where you can’t escape moving snow. Features like road cuts, creek beds, or cliff bands will allow even small amounts of debris to pile up deeply.

Avalanche Discussion

Yesterday, riders triggered soft wind slabs up to size 2 below ridgelines near and above treeline. People also triggered small, but long-running loose dry avalanches in more sheltered terrain. Some were caught and carried in the moving snow. Thankfully, there were no reported burials or injuries. The majority of the activity was concentrated on northerly aspects. 

The sun hit the cold, dry snow surfaces starting late yesterday morning, and a thin crust has likely formed. Observers reported some settlement as the daytime warming consolidated the recent snow on all aspects. Recent storm snow sits atop melt-freeze crusts in most places. Under that crust are either moist, round grains or sugary facets. In isolated areas, it rests directly on weak faceted grains. Showers added another inch or two yesterday, and there is plenty of soft snow available for shifting winds to redistribute.

Below-average temperatures can slow the usual processes that allow for improving stability. Continue to monitor conditions closely throughout your tour. If you notice drifting snow, stiff surfaces, or recent avalanche activity, be ready to retreat to more sheltered terrain or lower slope angles.
