Salt River and Wyoming Ranges

The avalanche danger is Considerable above 8,000 feet today. New snow and wind has formed slabs that will be sensitive to human triggers and may release naturally. In steep wind loaded terrain it will be important to be on the lookout for obvious signs of unstable snow such as avalanches, shooting cracks and whoompfing. Below 8,000 feet the danger will be Moderate, where it will be possible to trigger shallow avalanches in very steep terrain in areas that had snow on the ground prior to this recent storm.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )Snow will continue overnight and into tomorrow. Additional accumulation overnight will be 3-5” in the Tetons, 2-4” on Togwotee and 3-5” in the Southwest Trails forecast areas. Winds will be out of the southwest and west with average speeds ranging from 15-25 mph. Overnight temperatures will drop into the single digits at ridgetops, low teens at 8,000-9,0000 feet and high teens in the valleys. Daytime high temps tomorrow will be in the high teens to low twenties between 8,000-9,000 feet. Snowfall will continue during the day with another 3-5” expected across all forecast areas.As snow continues to accumulate and winds move the new snow around, slabs will continue to build. Tomorrow it will be possible to trigger avalanches in steep wind loaded terrain throughout the day in all three forecast areas. This problem will be more pronounced in the higher elevations of the Tetons and Southwest Trails areas, where more snow has accumulated. In those areas the danger will remain Considerable. In the higher elevations of the Togwotee Pass forecast area, where less snow has accumulated, the danger will be Moderate. In the lower elevations avalanches will remain unlikely as less snow has fallen. There the danger will remain Low.
