In sintesi

Triggering an avalanche will be possible on slopes where wind transported snow accumulated during and after the last storm, especially in the high alpine terrain above treeline on west through north and east facing slopes. As the day warms up, small wet snow avalanches will be possible on slopes in the direct sun. Keep an eye on terrain below you where triggering even a small avalanche can increase the consequence of getting caught in a slide.

    Wind slabs have had a few days to settle and bond. This last strecth of the wind slab problem lingered longer than normal, although they are now more stubborn to triggering. In the upper elevations where temperatures have been colder, wind slabs may still be possible to trigger. Look for the fat pillows of wind drifted snow especially in steep and convex terrain. Use careful evaluation before committing to steep slopes in the high alpine terrain that have been previously wind loaded.

    After a few cycles of warm days and cold nights, wet loose avalanches will become smaller, but still something to keep in mind. Even small wet loose avalanches can cause you to loose your footing in steep terrain. Be cautious on steep sun exposed slopes at mid and low elevations especailly if you are above cliffs or other terrain traps. 

    Monitor the surface conditions; as you observe wet or slushy snow boot top or deeper, wet loose avalanches can become larger. Watch for roller balls and pinwheels as precursors to this problem. 

    Use visual clues on the snow surface and timing to avoid this problem. Recognize which aspects are in the direct sun, especially during the warmest time of the day.

Avalanche Discussion

Continue to keep a watchfull eye on cornices at ridge tops. Be cautious when approaching ridges from behind. Stepping out onto a cornice can result in a air drop onto the slope below. On warm days, cornices can weaken and break naturally. When you are moving through the terrain, don't linger beneath cornices, especially the big ones.
