In sintesi

Generally stable avalanche conditions exist. Watch for rollerballs and small avalanches where dry snow becomes wet. Expect variable surface conditions and plan accordingly.

Avalanche Discussion

Several factors are in play that could cause areas of dry snow to become wet and unstable:

  • Temperatures at most weather stations remained above freezing overnight.
  • Cloudy skies are trapping heat.

The forecast for today is for clearing skies and winds shifting to the northwest. Both of these factors could allow polar aspects to cool. It’s a toss-up, so wax your skins and keep an eye out for rollerballs where dry surface snow is getting wet. Any loose wet avalanches should be small and confined to steep wind-sheltered areas where the snow has been soft and faceted.

Snow conditions vary. Solar aspects have been melting. Expect crusts and wind-affected surfaces in many places. The faceting process has allowed even wind-hardened snow to soften.

Temperatures today should be warmer than in previous days. Continue to keep an eye out for rockfall.
