Large persistent slab avalanches are unlikely, but not impossible, on upper elevation, north and east aspects. A poor snowpack structure exists where a 1-3 foot thick slab rests on top of weak, sugary facets at the ground.
Although hard to find, signs of instability include cracking, collapsing, and recent avalanches. Find a safe location to dig down into the snowpack to look for loose, sugary snow near the ground underneath a denser slab. If you find unstable conditions on an aspect and elevation you plan to ski or ride, avoid slopes steeper than 30 degrees.
