The main concern for avalanches today is wind slabs. Wind speeds are finally decreasing across all local weather stations after five days of strong, continuous north winds. The recent weather has significantly affected the upper snowpack, resulting in a variety of wind-affected snow surfaces, including sastrugi, wind slabs, and stripped snow surfaces. The sensitivity of wind slabs will vary based on their hardness and depth.
In areas that have experienced strong winds throughout this period, expect to find surfaces that are scoured, mixed with very hard wind slabs ranging from 6 inches to over 3 feet deep. The harder and deeper the wind slab, the more challenging it will be to trigger an avalanche. This is because harder slabs are less likely to bend and crack under a person's weight.
In more sheltered areas, where the wind was less intense or lasted for a shorter time, wind slabs will be thinner and softer. These are the areas where human-triggered avalanches remain possible. You can distinguish these slabs by whether you can break them by traveling over them or stomping on them. Be aware that the depth and hardness of wind slabs can vary even within a single slope. Triggering a wind slab is more likely at its thinner sections, but it can spread to deeper parts.
Be vigilant about the depth and hardness of wind slabs and look out for signs of instability, such as shooting cracks or collapsing snow. Wind slab avalanches could reach deeper layers in the snowpack, resulting in larger and more destructive avalanches.
