In sintesi

Some areas of surface wet snow are expected to form today, but the time window for wet loose avalanches is expected to be fairly limited ahead of an incoming storm. There is a small chance of encountering an unstable wind slab today along the downwind side of ridgetops. Identify any areas of developing instability and move around them accordingly. Increasing avalanche danger will occur this evening into tomorrow.

    The progression of the day today - increasing SW winds, a cold start to this morning, a short period of rapid warming, then increasing cloud cover and light precipitation this afternoon, is expected to limit to amount of wet loose avalanches that occur today. Surface wet snow formation is expected by late morning, but increasing cloud cover after that may lead to crust formation on the snow surface during the afternoon.

    If the weather forecast does not verify as expected today, watch for a greater potential for unstable wet snow. Roller balls and pinwheels are indicators that a wet loose avalanche could occur. If you encounter signs of unstable wet snow, move to areas of greater wind exposure or lower-angle terrain to minimize the hazard.

    Ridgetop winds are on the increase today. Very limited amounts of blowing and drifting snow are expected today with a melt-freeze crust on the snow surface on windward aspects. There is a small chance of encountering a lingering unstable wind slab that formed earlier this week on the downwind side of a ridge feature today. Most likely, wind slab instability will hold off until new wind slabs form following the onset of snowfall later today. Use clues such as blowing snow, cornices above a slope, or wind drifts as indicators as to where wind slabs may exist.

    A large cornice collapse was reported yesterday. Additional cornice collapses could occur today. Identify and move carefully around wind loaded slopes, corniced ridgetops, and slopes below large cornices.
