LOW avalanche danger exists at all elevations. Watch for isolated areas of unstable snow. Variable surface conditions including firm and smooth snow, areas textured by the wind and breakable crusts are still the biggest concern in the backcountry.
Avalanche Discussion
Generally safe avalanche conditions continue in the Eastern Sierra. Recent warm temperatures and an increasing sun angle have been softening the surface snow on sunny aspects. Avalanche activity is unlikely, but continue to watch for signs of unstable loose wet snow. Rockfall is a concern in terrain features such as couloirs and gullies that receive direct solar input. This could be an early warning sign of excessive warming. Monitor changing boot and ski penetration depths as an indication of the surface snow weakening, and retreat to shadier terrain if these observations exceed risk thresholds. Rollerballs, pinwheels and punchy, unsupportable snow are also signs that loose wet instabilities are rising.
Challenging travel due to variable conditions at all elevations remains our primary concern. Firm, smooth “slide for life” conditions are still perhaps the most consequential, even in low angle and below treeline terrain. Avoid exposing yourself over rocks and cliffs, tree islands and long steep slopes if you encounter these surfaces. Keep the tools of the ski mountaineer including ice ax and/or whippet, boot and ski crampons, and a helmet close at hand in preparation for travel on pieces or long stretches of terrain. Keep your tips up as you navigate 3-D snow surfaces in the alpine environment and be prepared for each turn to be different than the one before.
A brief change in the weather is approaching this week. Keep tabs on what the snow surface looks like. Smooth and firm snow could be the next bed surface for avalanches, and just a few inches of snow could shallowly bury obstacles and wind sculpted snow. A refresh will be welcome but will require an adjustment to our mindset after a long stretch of similar conditions.
