Wind slabs may be possible to trigger on Friday in specifc areas, primarily on northerly and east facing slopes near and above treeline. Evaluate slopes for signs of wind loading and be cautious on slopes over 30 degrees where recent wind slabs have formed.

    The wind slab problem from the last storm is a tricky one. We had sustained moderate winds early in the storm with the wind backing off over the last 24 hours. Some places where we would expect wind slabs to have formed were not wind loaded at all, while some specific slopes on north and north east aspects were wind loaded.  We have no observations from above treeline over the last week. Wind slabs formed several days ago will be trending toward being stubborn to nonreactive, however there could be pockets lurking out there that are still possible to trigger.

    Wind slabs form in leeward terrain below ridge tops and high points. Some gully features could also have wind slabs due to cross slope winds. If you observe cracking in wind deposited snow or recent wind slab avalanches, be cautious on wind loaded slopes over 30 degrees. 

     

Avalanche Discussion

The central Oregon mountains received a little over a meter (3 feet) of snow out of the storm cycle. Some of the snow has compacted and settled but it is still deep out there. The recent snow is sitting on a melt freeze crust formed after the warm days before the storm. The recent snow is bonding well to the melt freeze crust. The storm snow is relatively right side up with the snow on the bottom being more dense than the snow up at the surface.  That is a favorable setup and reduces the chance of storm slabs. There were some reports of storm slab and dry loose avalanches during the storm period, however with time and settling the chances of these now happening are low. Always look for signs of recent avalanche activity and signs of unstable snow and adust your terrain choice accordingly.
