In sintesi

You may be able to trigger small avalanches at upper elevations where the wind has drifted recent snow.  Stormy weather overnight will give way to clearing and cool temperatures on Saturday. Snow cover is still shallow; watch for hitting shallowly buried obstacles and consider using roads and summer trails for access.

    If you find signs of instability like cracks shooting through the snow or wind drifts that break easily with the weight of a person, stay off of leeward slopes over 35 degrees. Look for visual clues like sharp wind drifts and stiffer snow surfaces. Steer around fresh drifts and stick to lower-angle or wind-sheltered slopes. 

    On Friday, a warm and windy storm brought a few inches of snow the Cascade crest with strong westerly winds. Snow and wind will taper off by Saturday morning. In areas nearest the crest like the Salmon la Sac and upper Teanaway drainage expect enough new snow and wind transport for fresh wind slabs on leeward slopes. Aside from due south aspects, you may find reactive conditions, as new snow may be resting on a layer of surface hoar or weak snow surrounding thin crusts.

Avalanche Discussion

On Friday, NWAC forecasters found 2cm of new snow on Dirty Face Mtn. The snow that got buried on Friday is a mix of melt freeze crusts on slopes in direct sun, and a thin crust sometimes capped with large surface hoar on shaded or sheltered slopes. Regarding the latter, we have a few reports of surface hoar from both the Teanaway and Mission Ridge. Theres also a couple crust/weak snow sandwiches in the upper snowpack that may be worth tracking as new snow adds up. 

In many places coverage is still thin, and theres plenty of brush to contend with off the trails. You may find exposed boulderfields and rocks on many slopes, so consider using summer trails and/or roads for access.
