An incoming cold front will cause fresh snow and gusty southwest winds this afternoon. Fresh wind slabs will begin to form on wind-exposed slopes. These features may develop on surface crusts, which can further increase their instability.
- You are most likely to find slabs downwind from ridges, saddles, and other prominent terrain features.
- Blowing snow is a signal that wind slabs are forming on the slopes below.
- Etched surfaces and dune-shaped features are signs of wind-affected snow.
- Cracks that shoot out from your feet or machine imply that you can trigger an avalanche in the new snow.
When in doubt, move to slopes that are less steep and/or more sheltered from the wind.
In areas favored by recent snowfall, you may find unstable snow on sheltered slopes. Use small, inconsequential slopes to test how the new snow bonds to the old snow surface. Consider moving to less steep terrain if you find 8+ inches of new snow.

This natural avalanche occurred from the recent windloading event (12/19/25) in steep, alpine terrain. (NE ~6700'). Today's fresh snow and wind may trigger slides like this.
