In sintesi

Last night's storm brought up to a foot of snow and strong wind. Expect to find fresh wind drifts that will be sensitive to your weight. This snow is falling on a generally weak snowpack. You're likely to trigger a 1.5-3 foot thick avalanche on many slopes—including areas that are more sheltered from the wind. Avalanches may be triggered remotely—from gentler terrain above, below, and to the sides of steep slopes.

    Triggering a 1.5-3' thick persistent slab avalanche is likely on many slopes. Persistent weak layers (sugary facets, surface hoar, or crusts) exist on most aspects and elevations. The weakest facets we've found are on shadier aspects.

    Thick slabs are more common as you climb into terrain that's exposed to the wind. Recently wind-loaded slopes with stiffer snow in the top couple of feet of the snowpack are the most likely to produce large avalanches. You're less likely to trigger a large avalanche on lower-elevation slopes and those more sheltered from the wind.

    Snowpack cracking and collapsing are clear symptoms of an unstable snowpack. Tilt that collapse onto a steep slope, and you're flirting with an avalanche. Collapses can travel large distances releasing avalanches above you or on nearby steep slopes. Wind-loaded areas feel stiffer under your skis or sled and are more supportable. Don't be fooled, the weak snow beneath the slab still exists (video).  

    Unfortunately, avoidance is the only way to effectively manage this problem. Skiing or riding steep terrain is a risky roll of the dice. Recent reports of skier-triggered avalanches, abundant cracking and collapsing, and a widespread poor snowpack structure (dense slab + weak layers) are all the reasons I need to continue to travel conservatively. 

    (12/5/2022) This very large natural avalanche on Eureka Peak near Smiley Creek likely occurred around Dec 2. The heavily wind-loaded slope likely failed on a persistent weak layer that was buried in late November.

    Up to a foot of new snow fell in the Sawtooths last night. Rapid, low-density snowfall and wind combined to form a fresh batch of wind slabs at upper elevation. Expect these slabs to be touchy as they formed on a mix of small facets, surface hoar, and crusts. I'd guess there were a few large natural slab avalanches last night or early this morning as well as numerous small dry loose "sluffs". 

    Look for fresh dunes of snow near ridgelines, in cross-loaded gullies, and on aprons at the base of couloirs and cliff bands. This problem overlaps the persistent slab problem described above. Smaller human-triggered wind slabs have the potential to "step-down" into deeper weak layers releasing a much larger, unpredictable, and more dangerous slide. 

    (12/8/2022) Crown of a large natural avalanche that was observed in the Fourth of July Creek drainage in the White Cloud Mountains on 12/8. It likely failed on 12/4 or 12/5, during or shortly after a windy storm. Though the crown is not particularly wide, this slide picked up speed and entrained a lot of debris thanks to the nature of the terrain. This slope faces W at 9,800'.

Avalanche Discussion

Even in the absence of last night's storm, we'd still be faced with CONSIDERABLE danger. Recent reports of skier-triggered avalanches, abundant cracking and collapsing, and a widespread poor snowpack structure (dense slab + weak layers) dictate this. Yesterday, observers near Galena Summit reported widespread collapsing, including while traveling on existing skin tracks. Another recent observation from near Galena Lodge reported collapses so sudden and loud that her Christmas Tree gathering mission sounded like it was at a shooting range. Certainly, stability has improved slightly since the end of our last storm 5 days ago, but not enough to move the needle on my conservative travel approach.

Although the danger remains CONSIDERABLE, today will be tricker and more dangerous than yesterday. Fresh wind slabs that formed overnight will not only be easy to trigger but will add weight to a widespread weak layer of snow now buried 1.5 to 3' deep. Conditions will be the most dangerous where these problems overlap at upper elevations and on wind-affected middle elevation slopes.
