In sintesi

Avalanches will be likely on upper elevation slopes where the wind has blown our recent snow (North, East, and South).  These avalanches could be large enough to bury or injure a rider.  On Monday I observed a size 1.5 avalanche that failed above the 2/21 crust.  Triggering a Wind Slab avalanche that fails at this depth could produce a very large avalanche.  Avalanches will also be possible below treeline and could fail within the new storm snow or as deep as the 2/21 crust.  Be wary of slopes that are 35 degrees or steeper and didn't see much traffic last week.

On Monday I triggered a Storm Slab avalanche near Santiam Pass.  This particular avalanche failed in last week's cold weak snow directly above the 2/21 melt-freeze crust.  On Tuesday Storm Slabs could exist in our most recent snow or on this deeper layer.  In particular watch for steep slopes that don't see much sun or skier traffic.

When we are getting a lot of new snow, my go to tests are the easy ones: hand shears, test slopes, and simple observations of the storm snow.  In this instance, compression tests that isolated below the Feb. 21 crust (likely 50-65 cm.) will also be useful.

Always with the Wind Slabs!  As snow continues to fall and the wind continues to blow from the West and SouthWest we continue to see Wind Slab formation.  There could be many flavors of Wind Slab on Tuesday, from shallow and touchy to deep and stubborn.  It is probably a good day to be humble and conservative, even on slopes that you are familiar with.

With approx. 20 cm of new snow forecast for overnight accompanied by decreasing temperatures, I expect we will see Dry Loose avalanches tomorrow.  Don't let them fool you though.  Dry Loose avalanches are not always mutually exclusive of other avalanche characters.  While they are a good sign that the most recent storm snow isn't forming a cohesive slab, there can be deeper weak layers present.

Avalanche Discussion

What a week so far, and it looks like the riding should remain great for the near future!  My avalanche brain is focused on the upper snowpack, hunting for mid-storm weak layers, and evaluating last week's snow that lies directly above the prominent melt-freeze crust (down 50-65 cm.)  As of yet, we haven't found any facets above this crust, and the weakness seems to exist in preserved powder from last week.
