In sintesi

The chance of human triggered or natural wet slide activity will increase as temperatures rise above freezing and the sun heats snow surfaces today. An early start and choosing a route that avoids steep sun-baked slopes, especially those under cornices are key to safe travel.

    Temperatures will be several degrees warmer than yesterday despite the growing cloud cover.  Shady terrain at 9,000' in the moutains may reach 40 degrees. Wet slides can start as small loose avalanches and then entrain considerable amounts of snow or trigger wet slab avalanches as they descend the slope. The bestb startegy to avoid trouble with wet avalanches is to time your exit and choose your aspect carefully. Steep northerly slopes below 7,500' with snow remaining may develop these problems as well.

    A number of wet avalanches have been triggered during this cycle some small and some large enough to capture a person. 

Avalanche Discussion

The spring diurnal cycle is allowing for freezing of the upper portion of the snowpack at night and then weakening of the snow surface during the day.  Snow conditions are most ideal for skiers and riders as these surfaces soften but before they become so weak that wet slide activity becomes active. While most terrain is going through repeated melt-freeze cycles, cold settled powder can still be found in north facing shaded terrain.  For those venturing into the highest terrain in GTNP, watch for areas where small wind slabs may lurk near ridge crests and summits.
