In sintesi

A saturated upper snowpack may produce isolated natural or human-triggered wet avalanches large enough to injure you. Use boot penetration past your shins and a lack of a surface crust to confirm the potential for instability. Steer clear of very steep slopes where point releases can entrain enough snow to push you into unfriendly terrain.

    We're expecting a second night with a poor overnight refreeze heading into Sunday. As water moves into previously dry layers of snow several inches below the surface, expect the potentail for isolated natural or human-triggered avalanche large enough to harm you. As recently as Thursday, the snowpack had layers of dry snow intermingled with crusts on N and E aspects. As rainwater or melt reaches these layers, it will become easier to trigger small avalanches. These avalanches may entrain more snow than the evidence prior activity you might find in the terrain. If you can't walk on the snow surface, consider steering around steep slopes, particularly where they might deposit you in a terrain trap or take you for a ride over a cliff.

Avalanche Discussion

Since mid-day Monday, temperatures have primarily remained above freezing except for a period of time early Thursday and a short duration Friday night. ONP rangers reported 2" boot supportable crusts Friday morning on all aspects at Hurricane Ridge, but the crust was no longer supportable Saturday morning. A light mist added to the manky conditions on Saturday. A freeze-thaw cycle during the workweek helped limit avalanche activity. ONP rangers reported fresh rollerball activity on the south side of Mt. Angeles on Thursday. Rangers found a mix of dry snow layers, crusts, and rounded melt forms within the upper two feet of the snowpack on N and E aspects. Some of these layers could act as an interface, but you'll have to make your own assessment given the variability of this spring-like upper snowpack. You can use a quick shovel or hand shear to determine if any of these layers may be a problem in your terrain before moving onto larger, steeper terrain features.

As we plod along further into spring, be prepared to navigate spring-related travel hazards like open creeks, rocks and trees.  Any overhanging cornices are likely to be soft and sagging; you would be well served to avoid exposure to these on the slopes below.

2021-22 Forecast Schedule: Avalanche danger ratings will be issued for the Olympics every Friday through Sunday and during mid-week holidays. During the week when the Hurricane Ridge road is closed, forecast information will be updated daily to include expected conditions and relevant travel advice under the No Rating label.
