In sintesi

Large wind slabs will be harder to trigger on Saturday, but the consequence remains. Maintain a margin of safety from large, steep slopes. Gradually milder temperatures are helping the snowpack heal, but cold, shaded slopes at upper elevations and heavily wind-loaded east aspects will be the slowest to improve.

    Recent large natural wind slab activity combined with widespread hard slab structure suggests we can't write this problem off yet. You may find that it's fairly easy to shear a firm block of snow off where it overlies lower density layering, but trigger points may be fewer and farther between. You're most likely to trigger something in shallow, rocky terrain or above an unsupported slope, or below a corniced ridgeline. Strong W and NW winds created widespread sastrugi in upper elevation terrain, so note where this ends and transitions to firm wind deposits and avoid these slopes. MHM Patrol reported that many of these deposits may be on mid-slope features, gullies, and morraines down toward canyon bottoms. Ease into the terrain, engaging with smaller, lower consequence features with clean  runouts if you move onto wind loaded slopes.

    A natural (est) D2.5 wind slab failed on an E aspect near 9,800 ft, propagating widely and running about 1,500 vertical feet above the Newton/Clark Canyon split.

    Saturday will be warmer than Friday, but the cloud forecast remains uncertain. If the relatively weak January sunshine gets through, it will moisten snow surfaces on steep slopes in direct sunshine. Dry snow wind-affected snow remains, particularly at lower elevations. If it becomes heavy and wet, you could trigger a generally small wet avalanche. A small natural wet loose avalanche is also possible. Adjust your aspect if the snow starts warming up, rollerball activity increases, or you see evidence of activity.

    Example: Surface wet or dry loose snow avalanches will become more dangerous the deeper they entrain recent snow.

Avalanche Discussion

NWAC is aware of an avalanche involvement in the East Central Zone, Teanaway River/Longs Pass area. Information is currently limited. We are working with local authorities and Search and Rescue personnel. We will update once more information is available.

Mt. Hood picked up 30" inches of snow during the Tuesday through Thursday night storm cycle. During this time, the winds only relented briefly on Wednesday. These strong winds and snowfall created a confirmed avalanche cycle on the upper mountain with two large avalanches running mid-storm and descending into NWAC forecast elevations. The snow structure that created these avalanches is present into NWAC mid-elevation bands and you should keep them on your mind for a few more days.

The lower and middle snowpack remains strong, with primary concern above a prominent 1/3 rain crust. In many areas, you may also encounter a 1/6 sun crust on SW–S–SE aspects, overlain by 6–8 inches of consolidated snow. Recent reports have suggested a good bond to these crusts, but we have no information from higher on the mountain. Reports suggest that mixed precipitation falling Thursday night may have created firmer surface snow on some areas of the mountain.

Shallowly buried obstacles remain widespread at lower and middle elevations, increasing consequences in both falls and avalanches.
