Triggering an avalanche is unlikely in most terrain today. Isolated pockets of unstable snow exist in very steep terrain in the upper elevations, where recent snow and wind has created slabs less than a foot thick. Avalanches in this terrain could be large enough to knock you off your feet. Use caution if travelling in terrain where a small avalanche can have higher consequences, such as above cliffs, trees and gullies.

“Dry January” lived up to its name this year, as snowfall after the 10th of the month tallied up to just five inches. Snow and wind over the last few days has created isolated pockets of wind slab in the upper elevations. Observers have noted some small human triggered avalanches involving the new snow during this time. Expect more of the same today, as well as shallow wet loose avalanches during the heat of the day.  Despite this, the vast majority of terrain has a stable snowpack. This is a good reminder that it is still possible to encounter unstable snow during times of otherwise good stability. Because of this it remains important to consistently practice safe travel habits. When entering steep terrain, travel one at a time, watch your partners and use islands of safety when stopping.
