    Your chances of triggering a wet loose avalanche will increase with direct sunlight. Recent avalanche activity has been relatively quiet, suggesting these avalanches may be becoming more difficult to trigger, but they are still possible. Overnight refreeze has been light but helpful, slowing how quickly surfaces become soft and unsupportable.

    Timing is key to managing this issue. As the day heats up, pay attention to the surrounding snow. Southerly aspects will offer the best travel early in the morning, but as the day heats up, plan to move onto more shaded slopes. If you begin sinking into deep, wet snow, or if travel feels sticky and slow, it’s time to transition to shadier aspects or lower-angle terrain.

Avalanche Discussion

Thursday was another very warm day in the West South. The Paradise weather station (5,400') recorded a high of 58°F at 1 p.m., and Crystal Mountain reached 48°F around midday. East flow continued through the mountain gaps, helping keep areas like White Pass and Crystal Mountain a little cooler.

An NWAC forecaster made it to Paradise today, where an overnight refreeze helped firm up snow surfaces first thing in the morning. They also noted numerous old, natural slab and loose avalanches, having likely occurred sometime last weekend or early in the week. Snow coverage at Paradise has improved compared to a couple of weeks ago, which is challenging to come by right now.

Safe to say, this kind of warmth is unusual for this time of year. Anytime conditions are out of the ordinary, it’s worth keeping your guard up. There hasn’t been any reported new avalanche activity across the West South in the past couple of days, but warm weather continues, and many areas haven’t dipped below freezing in days. Keep an eye out for extra soft and mushy surface snow, where triggering an avalanche is most likely.

Rockfall and icefall are also very real hazards on the volcanoes. Limit your time spent underneath cliffs and steep, rocky terrain.
