You could trigger an avalanche in wind-drifted snow on steep north, east, and south-facing slopes above 3000 feet. Watch for snow drifts resting on an icy surface that may slide easily, especially in steep terrain where sliding falls could have serious consequences. Avalanches may become larger and more dangerous later in the day if snowfall continues.

    What and where is it: Overnight snowfall of just over 2 inches, with another 2-6 inches possible today, and shifting winds will form wind slabs on north, east, and south-facing slopes above 3000 feet. The largest slabs will be on east and southeast aspects, where they may be large enough to bury a person. If snowfall reaches the higher end of expected totals, slabs may become more sensitive and could slide naturally later today as west winds increase and continue loading these slopes.

    How can you recognize it: Look for areas of smooth, pillowy snow that indicate recent drifting. As you move through terrain, use your pole or boot penetration to assess the thickness of these slabs. Digging with your hand, pole, or shovel can help you see how well the new snow is adhered to the icy bed surface, as poor bonding could allow the slab to slide easily. Pay attention to snowfall rates and wind speeds throughout the day to assess whether wind slabs are growing larger and becoming more reactive.

    How can you manage it: If slabs are small and well bonded to the icy bed surface, they may be relatively easy to manage. However, if slabs grow larger or show poor bonding, favor travel on firm surfaces or thinner drifts to reduce your chances of triggering an avalanche. Consider the timing of your travel in avalanche terrain, what’s manageable this morning may become more problematic this afternoon. Pay close attention to changing conditions.

Avalanche Discussion

New wind slabs are the primary avalanche concern today. However, they do not eliminate the risk of a dangerous sliding fall. In many areas the new snow remains thin, and even a small slab release could lead to a long sliding fall.

Recent warm temperatures and rain created holes and weak spots in the snowpack that may not yet be fully filled by new snow. These openings remain a hazard. One example is the waterfall hole in The Lip of Tuckerman Ravine, which may still be only partially covered.

As snowfall and winds continue through the day, wind slabs may grow larger and more reactive. Snowfall totals remain somewhat uncertain and will depend on how quickly the current system exits and how much moisture remains for upslope snow showers. If snowfall reaches the higher end of expectations, larger avalanches and possibly natural avalanches may become possible later today.

Pay close attention to changing conditions, especially in wind-loaded terrain where drifting snow continues to accumulate.
