In sintesi

Triggering an avalanche on buried surface hoar at upper elevation is likely this weekend. The most dangerous terrain will be upper elevation north aspects.

Careful snowpack assessment is necessary for backcountry travel this weekend. It will be possible to remotely trigger an avalanche from above, below, or to the side. 

Dig in the snow to identify the problem and look for a slab over a layer of weak or sugary snow. If you find it, stick to slopes less than 30 degrees in slope angle.

    There are two primary buried layers of concern making up our persistent slab problem. The most reactive and concerning is surface hoar that was buried and preserved on February 14th. This layer is worst at upper elevation on northerly or shaded slopes where human triggered avalanches are likely.  At mid elevation and on south aspects, the layer is present but less continuous and less reactive but still possible to trigger an avalanche on.  The second layer of concern is a lower layer of buried surface hoar and near surface facets from late January. This layer is showing less reactive, but still is not trustworthy.  

    Another factor affecting the avalanche problem is slab thickness and density. You are more likely to trigger an avalanche in areas with a thicker or harder slab like wind drifted terrain where a larger slab is present. Don't ignore areas with a thinner slab though, as they are still capable of avalanching.

    You may not see obvious red flags like cracking, collapsing or whumfing before triggering an avalanche. To identify the problems, dig in the snow. Buried surface hoar will present as a thin grey line running across the snowpit wall. Dig quick pits in multiple locations as surface hoar is highly spatially variable. 

    If you find buried surface hoar, do not trust it. Surface hoar is an especially nasty buried weak layer and can produce avalanches on low angle slopes down to 30 degrees in slope angle.

Avalanche Discussion

It will be a beautiful sunny weekend in the mountains and the temptation to rush to sunny powder slopes will be real. Make sure you assess the slope you plan to ski or ride carefully as we have an avalanche problem that is not present everywhere, but where it is present looks especially nasty.

A persistent slab problem as its name suggests, sticks around for a while and causes problems. Buried surface hoar is not a layer to trust and is a common factor in fatal avalanche accidents. 

Unlike areas north of our zones, we are not seeing widespread cracking, collapsing, or natural avalanches on these layers. This is dangerous because you won’t get the feedback to alert you of hazardous conditions until you trigger an avalanche. The layer also has a high degree of spatial variability where it is present in many areas, but only very reactive in specific aspects and elevation bands. These elevation bands shift as we move around the mountains, likely tied to where valley inversion layers set up during the surface hoar formation earlier in the month. 

Digging in the snow is the only way to identify the problem. The best way to find weak layers is to dig down and look for them. Often, surface hoar gets destroyed up high by wind and sun but survives to get buried in sheltered areas. A common trap is to dig at ridgetop and not find surface hoar, then trigger a surface hoar avalanche partway down your line.

Get your hands or shovel in the snow regularly. Even a quick hand pit can help you figure out where weak layers exist.
