Avalanche Activity

Wind slabs represent the main danger.

The wind slabs of the last two days are lying on the unfavourable surface of an old snowpack in particular on steep shady slopes. They are in some cases thick and can be released easily. As a consequence of the southeasterly wind the wind slabs will increase in size additionally since Wednesday. Especially adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls: The wind slabs can be released easily, even by a single winter sport participant, in all aspects. Backcountry touring and other off-piste activities call for meticulous route selection.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area 40 to 100 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, fell on Sunday above approximately 1500 m. The weather conditions fostered a settling of the snowpack. Especially adjacent to ridgelines in all aspects: The sometimes strong wind has transported the new snow. Here snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. The weather conditions gave rise to rapid moistening of the snowpack in particular on steep sunny slopes. Weak layers exist in the centre of the snowpack in particular on steep shady slopes.

Tendency

Significant decrease in danger of moist and wet avalanches as the temperature drops. The various wind slabs have bonded with the old snowpack.
