Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: The snowpack will continue to thaw below 1100 metres then later at all levels. Instabilities will remain within the snowpack in steep and convex terrain and be most widespread above 900 metres on North-West to North-East aspects, more localised on West and East. On these aspects between 500 and 900 metres localised instabilities will persist on steep banks and burn lines. Cornices will be prone to collapse, potentially triggering slopes below. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Gale force Westerly winds will ease to strong during the day and back South-Westerly. Light precipitation expected over night and during the afternoon. Initially this will fall as snow above 1100 metres before turning to rain at all levels during the afternoon. The 1100 metre freezing level will rise to above the summits by dawn. Observed Weather Influences: Gale force South-Westerly winds with precipitation falling as light snow above 1100 metres. The freezing level rose to the summits by midday ObservedSnowStability: The snowpack surface is beginning to thaw at all but the highest levels. Instabilities persist on North-West to North-East aspects, these are most widespread on steep terrain above 800 metres and more localised on West and East aspects. Debris from recent avalanche activity was noted on a steep Northerly aspect at around 1000 metres. Between 500 and 800 metres localised instabilities remain on steep and convex banks and burn lines. Cornices are unstable. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
