Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: Localised shallow windslab will form during the evening, mainly in the northern part of the forecast area. Steeper wind sheltered locations on South-East aspects above 900 metres are most likely to be affected, with accumulations also expected to form on South and South-West aspects. Elsewhere the old snow will refreeze, developing firm and potentially icy surface layers. The avalanche hazard will be Low.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Light snow above 800 metres during the evening on a strong Northerly wind that will ease. Mainly dry overnight and through the daytime. Light Northerly winds will gradually increase to become fresh Southerly by the afternoon. Freezing level lowering to 450 metres by the end of the night, then climbing to fluctuate around 800 metres during the afternoon. Observed Weather Influences: A mild and overcast morning with precipitation arriving by mid-afternoon, this initially falling as wet snow on the highest summits only, later down to 800 metres. Strong South-Westerly, veering West-South-Westerly winds, then Northerly with the onset of precipitation. Freezing level above the summits at midday but lowering rapidly during the afternoon. ObservedSnowStability: The snow has continued to consolidate in the mild conditions. Surface layers are wet but deposits are generally well bonded with only minor wet snow surface instabilities displayed in the steepest locations on North-East to South-East aspects above 900 metres. Most overhanging sections of snow have collapsed leaving very steep remnants behind. Many areas are snow-free or have shallow patches. The avalanche hazard is Low.
