Avalanche Activity

As a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation more medium-sized and, in isolated cases, large wet avalanches are possible as the day progresses.

The weather will be very warm. The early morning will see favourable conditions generally, but the danger of wet and gliding avalanches will increase later. The weather conditions will cause a rapid weakening of the snowpack in particular on steep east, southeast and west facing slopes. In particular at the base of rock walls and on extremely steep east, southeast and west facing slopes more medium-sized and, in isolated cases, large moist and wet avalanches are possible as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation. This also applies on very steep shady slopes below approximately 2500 m. , when first humidification reaches the persistent layers within the snowpack. Backcountry tours and off-piste skiing should be started and concluded very early.

Snowpack Structure

Outgoing longwave radiation during the night was good. The surface of the snowpack will freeze to form a strong crust and will soften quickly. In the last few days the natural activity of medium wet and gliding avalanches has gradually increased. As a consequence of mild temperatures and solar radiation the snowpack settled during the last few days. The spring-like weather conditions gave rise to gradual consolidation of the snowpack. Especially steep shady slopes high altitudes: The snowpack is dry. In very isolated cases weak layers exist in the centre of the snowpack. At elevated altitudes snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. The snowpack will be moist at low and intermediate altitudes. At low altitude and on sunny slopes the snowpack will soften quickly.

Tendency

As a consequence of the northwesterly wind there will be only a slight decrease in the danger of wet and gliding avalanches.
