Snowpack

On Wednesday night, precipitation is expected over widespread areas, most of which is anticipated in the western and the northern regions. The snowfall level lies at 2400 m and will temporarily ascend up to nearly 2800 m in the western regions. On shady slopes in high alpine regions and on glaciers, the fresh snow will frequently fall onto a thin, continuous snowpack. As a consequence of strong-velocity westerly winds, snowdrift accumulations will be generated which are prone to triggering. In the Bernina region the large amounts of fresh snow and freshly generated snowdrift accumulations of recent days are gradually stabilising. Wintery conditions prevail in that region at high alpine altitudes.

Outlook through Saturday, 28.10.2023

On Thursday night in the western and the northern regions, an additional round of precipitation is anticipated. The snowfall level is expected to descend from 2400 down to nearly 2000 m. In the furthermost western part of the Lower Valais, 30 to 50 cm of fresh snow is expected; 15 to 30 cm on the northern flank of the Alps. During the daytime hours on Friday it will be partly sunny. On Friday night, a few centimetres of additional snowfall is expected above 1800 m. During the daytime on Saturday it will be quite sunny. The danger of dry-snow avalanches will increase significantly in the western and northern regions on Friday, particularly in high alpine zones. Furthermore, as a result of solar radiation, moist snowslides can be expected. On Saturday, avalanche danger will decrease. Nevertheless, the avalanche situation will remain wintery, particularly in high alpine regions.
