In sintesi

Natural avalanches are unlikely today but human triggered avalanches are possible on any aspect at treeline or above.  Use caution when moving into avalanche terrain, slopes steeper than 30 degrees.  Don't commit to a line that will be difficult to get out of if things start moving.  Play it safe again today.

    A change in density weak layer exists about one foot deep in the newest strom snow.  We got this layer to pop out with light force in our snowpit stress tests.  We were not able to get this layer to react on rollovers or steep slopes.  Our friends who were snowmobiling near Flattop in the Selkirks told us they were hearing whumphing and that was enough for them to play it safe and stick to the trees.  I believe that change in density weak layer was the culprit for the whumphing.

    The persistent slab is gaining strength as it gets compressed under the weight of new snow but it still reveals itself under stress tests.  Compression tests created failures with moderate force and the extended column test resulted in full propagation with hard force applied.  This means that the structure of that weak layer is still weak a not yet fully bonded.  In the right curcumstances it could still avalanche.  You would be most likely to trigger this layer in  steep, convex terrain on any aspect.  You might also trigger it by triggering the upper change in density weak layer which could result in a step-down failure at the deeper weak layer.  This would create a big mess that may not be survivable.

Avalanche Discussion

The riding and sliding is very good out there right now but you have to be selective about the terrain you're riding.  Since we have gotten so much new snow since Christmas the deeper facet layers we were concerned about early in the season have compressed out.  Our main concern now is the new snow since Christmas.  There are multiple surface hoar weak layers but they are hard to reveal.  This is a bad situation since we know surface hoar is a nasty weak layer but we can't always pinpoint it.  Just know that we recently went through one of the worst avalanche cycles I have experienced.  The pack is gaining strength but there are lingering problems.  Look for the 5 red flags and choose your lines carefully today and this weekend.
