In sintesi

Spring like conditions and fairly stagnant weather patterns have left us with rather solid, and unfortunately not very exciting snow conditions.  A rain crust is present all over our region and depending on area, it ranges from stout and supportive, to easy to puch through. The good new is, that freeze thaw cycles have greatly stabilized the snowpack, the bad news is that condtions are poor for travel and finding some fun in the backcountry!

Winds have been blowing from various directions so pockets of windslab may be found on all aspects at higher elevations. These slabs are continuing to bond to the surface below and are becoming more difficult to trigger; however, if you did find a pocket, its still possible to go for a ride. Be aware when travelling under ridgelines and through gullies at high elevations, and always consider exposure when choosing routes.

Small and isolated windslab release below ridgeline on NE aspect in East Cabinets.

Avalanche Discussion

Stagnant weather and warmer conditions have solidified our snowpack, providing us with low risk avalanche conditions. Unforunately, as the case commonly may be, low risk is equating to a non-exciting snowpack.

While there does not appear to be any major changes in weather systems coming through any time soon, it is looking like we will receive some small amounts of precipitation in the coming days. Be aware of how any new accumulation bonds to our existing crusty surface, and keep in mind that any new snow will be available for transport. New wind slab buildup resting on top of a stout crust will likely increase hazards.
