In sintesi

Today there were reports of avalanche activity (size 1 - 2) from across the region.  As the snow and wind let up somewhat into Sunday we can expect a slight decrease in the avalanche hazard on Sunday.  However, avalanches will still be likely at treeline and in the alpine.  Below treeline, shallow storm slabs will be possible.

    There were reports on the COAC site of Wind Slab avalanches today.  Wind slabs sometimes take a few days to stabilize.  Additionally snowfall is continuing (although lighter) overnight and into Sunday, and overnight winds will continue to be Moderate from the West and SouthWest.  New Wind Slabs will continue to build.

    We have a lot of touring in the Cascades that is in burned areas.  Pay attention when you are touring in these zones.  Sure it was once a dense forest, but now wind and blowing snow move much more easily through this terrain, and often I have seen Wind Slabs and even Cornices in what was once below treeline.

    It is likely that the Storm Slab avalanche problem from Saturday will have settled by Sunday.  You can often tell whether it has by observing settlement cones around trees.  I would continue to evaluate Saturday's storm snow with hand shears, shovel tilt tests, and best of all, test slopes.

    While warming tomorrow might create a new storm slab problem, it is likely to be small in size due to minimal new precipitaion.

Avalanche Discussion

Storm totals are as much as 2 feet in parts of the Cascades.  We have seen Wind Slab and Storm Slab avalanche activity throughout the last few days.  All of these avalanches have been failing on mid-storm intabilities, and I haven't observed any problematic persistent weak layers in our current snowpack.
