Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Heavy overnight rain at all levels will ease by the morning with some sleet and snow likely on the highest summits later as the freezing level lowers to around 1000 metres by the end of the afternoon. Gale force Westerly winds will start to ease by dawn, becoming a moderate North-Westerly by the end of the forecast period. Observed Weather Influences: After a bright start, rain arrived by late morning, preceded by some summit sleet and snow, before the freezing level rose to well above the summits during the afternoon. Light Westerly winds initially, strengthened through the day. ObservedSnowStability: There was a dusting of new snow on all aspects above 450 metres, adding to the recent snow cover, but not in significant amounts. The patchy old snow remains firm, well bonded and stable throughout. The avalanche hazard is Low.
