Avalanche Activity

A favourable avalanche situation will prevail

Very isolated avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular in extreme terrain. Restraint should be exercised because avalanches can sweep people along and give rise to falls.

Snowpack Structure

In the southern Valais as well as in the inneralpine and southern regions of Grisons, there are weak layers evident deeply embedded inside the snowpack. Although these layers are quite pronounced from place to place, there have been no further triggerings recorded from these layers during the last week. In the remaining regions of Switzerland the snowpack structuring is more favourable. On the northern flank of the Alps more than anywhere else, isolated gliding avalanches continue to be possible in isolated cases. In the southern regions there is unusually little snow on the ground, at numerous measurement stations less than has ever before been measured at this juncture of the season. As a consequence of the thin, often expansively metamorphosed (faceted) snowpack, there is currently heightened danger of falling into crevices on the glaciers, most particularly in the regions of Zermatt and Saas Fee. During a night of clear skies, a crust capable of bearing loads tends to form up to high altitudes on steep south-facing slopes.

Weather Synopsis

Following a predominantly clear night it was sunny during the daytime hours. In the furthermost southern regions, skies were overcast during the nighttime and the morning hours. Fresh snow: - Temperature: At midday at 2000 m, -7 °C. Wind: Winds were blowing predominantly at light strength, at moderate strength in the high alpine regions, from northeasterly directions. Following a night of predominantly clear skies it is expected to be sunny during the daytime hours. Fresh snow: - Temperature: At midday at 2000m, -6 °C. Wind: - Winds will generally be light, moderate in high alpine regions, from northeasterly directions; - in the Jura region a moderate strength bise wind will be blowing.

Tendency

Following nights of clear skies it is predominantly sunny during the daytime hours. As a result of light easterly winds, temperatures will tend to be low. The zero-degree level will lie at approximately 1500 m, in the southern regions it will sink temporarily to 600 m on Tuesday. The avalanche situation is expected to remain favourable. Isolated avalanche prone locations occur on very steep, shady slopes in the inneralpine regions in particular. Gliding avalanches are possible.
