Avalanche Activity

CM for 18/3/22 Slab above 850m, on N to E aspects, wet snow instabilities developing mainly on sun affected E and SE. Moderate Haz.

Forecast Snow Stability: Localised quantities of moderately bonded windslab will exist in wind-sheltered areas, around coire rims and gully tops above 850 metres, primarily on North to Easterly aspects. Wet snow instabilities will develop during the day mainly on sun affected East and South-Easterly aspects. Any recently formed cornices will be fragile. Elsewhere the existing spring snowpack will be well bonded and stable. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Further wintry showers will ease overnight, as high pressure start to affect the area. In clearing overnight skies, the Freezing level will lower to around 400 metres, rising to above summit elevations as the day progresses. The winds will remain strong throughout, initially West-South-Westerly then Southerly from first light. Observed Weather Influences: An early bright start rapidly deteriorated as hill fog and wintry showers brought rain, sleet and snow to summit areas; a few bright periods developed, with the passing of wintry bands later in the afternoon. The winds have been strong South-Westerly. ObservedSnowStability: Areas of new windslab exist above 850 metres in wind-sheltered gully tops and around coire rims, these mainly on steepest North through to Easterly aspects. Elsewhere the existing snowpack is generally well bonded and stable. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
