Avalanche Activity

Above approximately 2800 m snow has fallen in some localities. Moist and wet avalanches are the main danger.

The Avalanche Warning Service currently has only a small amount of information, so that the avalanche danger should be investigated especially thoroughly in the relevant locality. The sleet gave rise to significant moistening of the snowpack in all aspects below approximately 2800 m. The surface of the snowpack will freeze to form a strong crust only at high altitudes and will soften during the day. The weather will be partly cloudy. The danger of moist and wet avalanches will increase a little during the day. As a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation more wet snow slides and avalanches are to be expected as the day progresses, even medium-sized ones, caution is to be exercised in particular on extremely steep north facing slopes below approximately 2900 m, and on very steep east, south and west facing slopes at high altitude.

Snowpack Structure

Night: 5 cm of snow, but less in some localities, has fallen above approximately 2800 m. Up to 2800 m rain has fallen. The high humditiy will give rise to rapid settling of the snowpack over a wide area. Thursday: Some rain will fall until late morning. Local showers will alternate with areas of clear or cloudy nights: surface refreezing of the snow could vary greatly from area to area. In the last few days the weather was mild. This situation gave rise to increasing moistening of the snowpack below approximately 2900 m. As a consequence of highly fluctuating temperatures the snowpack consolidated. This applies in particular on steep sunny slopes at high altitude, and in all aspects at intermediate altitudes. Hardly any more avalanches were reported. The amount of snow is subject to significant local variations. Especially on sunny slopes below approximately 2600 m no snow is lying. On shady slopes below the tree line hardly any snow is lying. Individual weak layers exist in the bottom section of the snowpack in particular in high Alpine regions.

Tendency

The weather will be mostly sunny. The surface of the snowpack will freeze to form a strong crust and will soften quickly. Slight increase in danger of moist avalanches as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation.
