Avalanche Activity

As the snowfall becomes more intense the prevalence and size of the avalanche prone locations will increase.

A lot of new snow to above 800 m: The prevalence of the avalanche prone locations will increase as the day progresses. The moderate wind will transport the snow. The fresh wind slabs can be released, even by a single winter sport participant and reach large size. This applies especially in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain in particular at intermediate and high altitudes, and on steep slopes above the tree line. In particular on steep shady slopes avalanches can be released in deep layers of the snowpack. The avalanche prone locations are quite prevalent and are barely recognisable because of the poor visibility. Backcountry touring and other off-piste activities call for experience and restraint.

Snowpack Structure

The new snow and wind slabs are bonding poorly with the old snowpack above the tree line. As a consequence of the strong wind the wind slabs will increase in size. Faceted weak layers exist deeper in the old snowpack in particular on shady slopes. On Friday medium-sized and, in isolated cases, large avalanches were observed.
