Avalanche Activity

SC 16.01 Unstable windslab will continue to develop on NE, E, SE and S aspects above 850m. Cornices fragile. Hazard Moderate

Forecast Snow Stability: Unstable windslab will continue to gain depth and become widespread on North-East through East to South aspects above 850 metres. Areas most affected will be steep wind sheltered slopes such as gully tops and coire rims. Cornices will be fragile. Other aspects will also be affected due to cross-loading. Wind exposed slopes will be firm and generally stable. At lower elevations, localised deep deposits will develop on steep banks and shallow gullies. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Snow showers, during the evening will ease overnight giving a dry day. Fresh North-Westerly winds overnight will by early morning increase to strong and back to become West-North-West for the rest of the forecast period. The freezing level will be around 200 metres. Observed Weather Influences: Heavier than expected snowfall eased by the morning to give a dry, cold day with some bright periods. Winds remained very strong from the North-West. The freezing level was around 400 metres. ObservedSnowStability: The strong winds are transporting the new snow and are starting to eroded the existing accumulations. Unstable windslab has gained depth and become more widespread in steep, wind sheltered locations on North-East through East to South aspects above 850 metres. Fragile cornices are also developing over these locations. Wind scoured slopes are firm and well bonded. At lower elevations the new snow is shallow and lies on bare ground. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
