In sintesi

Very dangerous conditions exist at the upper elevations. Skiers and riders could easily trigger large to very large avalanches and natural avalanches are possible. Backcountry travelers should stay off of and out from under steep slopes, and travel in avalanche terrain is NOT recommended. These large avalanches could run long distances into lower elevation terrain. At the mid-elevations, the additional load has increased the likelihood for backcountry travelers to trigger large to very large slab avalanches, and there, cautious route-finding and conservative decision-making are essential.

    Since the end of January, significant snowfall has added to the slab depth that lies over weak snow. These persistent layers vary in location and depth depending on the elevation. During periods of increased loading, it is important to choose conservative terrain as these persistent layers will become more sensitive to triggers. In areas where the snowpack has remained thin this season, like on south-facing slopes and at the mid and lower elevations, skiers and riders could trigger slab avalanche 3 to 6 feet deep and these avalanches will likely be un-survivable.

    Moderate wind speeds have easily transported light density snow onto leeward slopes, and the new snow is slightly upside-down as temperatures have warmed several degrees since it started snowing yesterday. Soft slabs at the snow’s surface and dangerous sluff will be easily triggered about 3 feet in-depth and could then trigger larger avalanches. Monitor the change in wind direction this afternoon as this could quickly cross load slopes and increase the hazard in new areas.

Avalanche Discussion

Light, scattered snow showers will be possible overnight and through the day on Sunday as northerly flow aloft develops. Overnight lows in the mountains will be in the single digits before rising into the mid-teens in the afternoon. Northwesterly ridgetop winds at 20 to 30 miles per hour overnight will decrease to 15 to 20 and back to the west during the day.While the storm cycle is over, the hazard isn’t. Avalanche conditions remain dangerous, and the general avalanche hazard is expected to be Considerable on Sunday. Skiers and riders could easily trigger small to large wind slabs and loose snow sluffs in steep avalanche terrain. While these slides could kill you, persistent deep slab avalanches present a much higher concern. These large to very large slabs could be triggered on a variety of aspects and elevations, and involvement could easily have fatal consequences. The easiest way to avoid these slides is to stay off of, and out from under, terrain that has slope angles greater than 30 degrees. Choosing to travel in steeper terrain will require conservative route finding and expert snowpack evaluation skills.
