As more snow becomes available to blow around, wind slabs will form along ridges, exposed gullies, and the base of cliffs. Even though many of these slides should remain small, they could hurt you if they carry you over the shallow early season snow full of rocks, trees, and open creeks. By Thursday afternoon, large avalanches may even be possible on upper elevation slopes greater than 35 degrees, especially closer to the Cascade Crest. Look and feel for signs of wind-loading as you travel like blowing snow and changes in snow surface texture and hardness. Seek out lower-angle terrain or wind-sheltered areas to reduce your risk.
