Avalanche Activity

Heed small fresh drifts, more frequent with ascending altitude

Avalanche danger is low. With ascending altitude, small drifts which are easily triggered become more frequent. In isolated cases small avalanches can also be triggered in the old snow. Such danger zones are found on very steep shady slopes in high alpine regions and extremely steep slopes in general. Apart from the risks of being buried in snow masses the hazards of falling need to be taken into consideration.

Snowpack Structure

Due to intermittently strong winds from varying directions yesterday, old snow was transported in exposed high altitude and high-alpine terrain and small fresh drifts accumulated. There was a small amount of fresh snow registered from place to place. The snowpack has settled well for the most part and is stable widespread. Weak layers in the old snowdrifts and near the uppermost melt-freeze crusts as well as at mid-level of the snowpack can be triggered only in isolated cases in shady steep terrain and in high alpine regions. On the weekend, many descents were undertaken in backcountry touring and freeriding terrain, and no avalanches were triggered.

Weather Synopsis

Perfect mountain weather, lots of sunshine, cloudless skies. Temperature at 2000 m: dropping from 1 to -4 degrees. Light W/SW winds, intensifying this afternoon.

Tendency

Light snowfall during the night tonight. Thursday will be cloudy, accompanied by moderate snowfall and intensifying winds. The focus will like in the northern regions. Avalanche danger will rise slightly on Thursday.
