Avalanche Activity

Snowpack is in early morning already wet

Avalanche danger above 1400m is moderate. Main danger: wet-snow. On slopes which have not yet discharged, small-to-medium wet loose-snow avalanchess can trigger naturally. Likelihood of triggering increases during the daytime hours as a result of rainfall. On steep slopes with smooth ground, in addition, small-to-medium sized glide-snow avalanches are possible. Glide cracks are indicators of imminent danger.

Snowpack Structure

The snowpack is thoroughly wet up to high altitudes and often down to ground level. On Thursday night, skies will be cloudy and the snowpack surface will have not outgoing radiation, cannot re-consolidated. Amid springtime temperatures and rainfall, the snowpack will be further weakened and on steep slopes there will be wet-snow or glide-snow avalanches. At high altitudes in the Berchtestaden Alps, small snowdrift accumulations can be generated in afternoon. Below 1400 m, there is hardly any snow on the ground on shady slopes.

Tendency

A cold front will bring lower tempertures and precipitation on the weekend. The danger of wet-snow avalanches will recede and dry-snow slab avalanches will come to the forefront.
