In sintesi

The upper 6" of snow can move easily with you and produce dry-loose avalanches on shaded or Northern aspects and wet-loose avalanches on solar aspects as the Sun and temps rise. Use good travel protocols on slopes steeper than 35 degrees, and use extra caution in steep consequential terrain like cliffs, gullies, ravines, and other terrain traps.

    The upper 6" of the snowpack is drier and has a layer of graupel and facets that are not bonding great and failed easily Saturday in pits and ski cuts, and from ski turns on slopes steeper than 35 degrees.

    Slough management in steep and confined or consequential terrain is going to be prudent, yet reasonably manageable on most slopes...use caution on steep slopes that are shaded or tilted to the North as the loose dry snow is enough to knock you down and into bad places you would rather avoid.

    Temps may stay cool enough today to keep this problem off the table if the partly cloudy forecast prevails. There is a small chance that there may be enough heat to get the snow moving. Natural avalanches may be small or non-existent, yet you may able to trigger a steep solar aspect within the upper 6 inches where a slick crust is under soft snow and is not bonded well.

    If you are seeing recent avalanches or rollerballs choose a cooler aspect to play or to travel on.

Avalanche Discussion

Our snowpack is mostly stable from previous warming and now a recent cooler pattern. Our current avalanche problems are within the upper 6-18" of the snowpack which came in a storm Tuesday 2/5 through Friday 2/9. Initially, the storm came in warmer and denser, then ended cold giving us an upper very light and dry snow surface which is soft and has recent facets and surface hoar that sparkles on the surface now and may be problematic later when buried. A crust formed mid-storm on solar aspects which makes travel on Solar aspects shallower and more difficult, especially on sidehill slopes steeper than 35 degrees. Shady or Northern aspects are going to remain deep and soft.

Winds have been light over the last 48 hours and wind slabs are likely, not sensitive, but evidence near ridgelines in leeward terrain Saturday suggests caution is still a good idea near cornices and ridgelines where it may not be completely impossible to trigger a small piece of dense snow at the edge of a cornice or a wind slab that is still trying to bond.
