In sintesi

The avalanche danger is LOW this morning rising to MODERATE after surface crusts thaw.  It's another ideal day for traveling in the mountains with shallow and easy-to-manage wet loose avalanche problems.   Finish early or head towards high, north-facing terrain to find the safest riding.  Anticipate small but pushy wet sluffs once the snow surface becomes wet, mushy, or produces rollerballs.

    As the recent snow moistens or gets wet on sunbaked slopes, it will be easy to trigger sluffs running above the dust layer and some could run naturally. Wet loose avalanches will be most dangerous in high-consequence terrain above cliffs, trees, or gullies. If the snow surface is producing rollerballs, pinwheels, or natural sluffs, use sluff management techniques or move to lower-angle terrain. You can avoid the problem on shadier aspects where the snow surface is frozen or dry.

Avalanche Discussion

Dozens of natural and skier-triggered wet loose avalanches were observed yesterday as the recent storm snow continued its transition from dry to wet.  All of these avalanches were shallow: fresh white snow running on the brown dust layer.  With a warmer start to the day and higher temperatures than yesterday, wet loose activity will continue today.  Wetting snow may encroach into some northerly terrain at mid or low elevations today and will continue to destabilize the snow on slopes that haven't already melted back to the dust layer.  If you're chasing corn snow, drop in while the top inch is softening for the best and safest riding.   Northeast to east aspects will warm first, then south, then west to northwest later in the day.  The most active slopes will be those that accumulated the most snow during the storm (leeward aspects at higher elevations, especially in the Northwest Mountains) and those that are just now transitioning from dry to wet today (slopes with a slight northerly tilt at lower elevations).  So far, good overnight freezes have been strong enough to prevent surface sluffs from gouging deeper than the recent snow.  That pattern is likely to continue today; any exceptions would be low elevations late in the day where the dust layer is close to resurfacing.  

Wind slab activity peaked on Saturday, and skiers triggered a couple of wind-drifted slabs yesterday.   Wind slabs should generally be healed up today, though isolated exceptions could exist.  Cornice falls remain a low-likelihood threat on slopes with overhung cornices, exemplified by this recent cornice fall off of Mt. Axtell.

Slightly cooler temperatures, increasing cloud cover, and strengthening winds should limit wet avalanche activity tomorrow, and LOW danger is expected.
