In sintesi

Gale force winds aloft are responsible for recent wind loading.   All aspects at mid and upper elevations have been kissed by the wind the past couple of days.  Be aware of catchment zones on  leeward slopes and just below ridges as triggering an avalanche in these areas is possible.

    Sustained NE winds over the past couple days have reached speeds of over 100 mph.  Horsetail wind vanes were visible on most Sierra peaks and ridges yesterday, from the strong-sustained NE wind.  Wind loading and cornice's formed throughout the day on alpine, leeward and crossloaded SE/S/SW/W/NW.  Be cautious and aware if traveling in this terrain.

    Clear-cold, high pressure days this week are producing solar influenced loose wet avalanches in mid and lower elevations. Mid february sun angles are heating up solar aspects with poor snow coverage. Specifically in darker rocky outcroppings from radiant heat. These loose snow avalanches are being triggered late morning to mid afternoon and may be large enough to sweep you off your feet. Be cautious if on southern aspects during these times, especially in consequential terrain.

Avalanche Discussion

  • We recently removed the persistent slab avalanche problem from the forecast, due to the lack of persistent slab avalanches. With that being said, there are still old-weak snow grains (basal facets) in very isolated areas that are slower to healing. Those areas are due North facing, above 9k’ in steep (35*+), rocky, well shaded, shallow snow zones.  Slab avalanches are still possibly triggered in these areas especially in convex terrain.
  • Surface North facing snow in sheltered tree'd terrain that wasn't effected by the wind, is showing evidence of near surface faceting with these cold clear nights. This is evident by the "powder" getting more "powdery".  This is great for skiing and snow sliding now, but may pose as a problem with future layers of snow on top of it.
