In sintesi

While the likelihood continues to decrease, triggering a slab 1’ to 3’ thick remains a possibility. You are most likely to trigger an avalanche in steep, rocky terrain on the northern half of the compass or areas that were  previously wind loaded. Seek out sheltered slopes less than 30 degrees.

    The Togwotee snowpack remains shallow and weak. December snow has formed a slab in many locations that sits on top of well developed, weak, sugary snow.  There is high variability of snow height (and slab thickness) across the zone from wind redistribution. Mild temperatures over the last week have decreased the possibility of triggering an avalanche, however, steep, shady slopes should be treated with suspicion. When in doubt, dig down to confirm or deny the existence of facets at the base of the snowpack. Watch for terrain traps as you travel, especially under steep shady slopes where even a small avalanche could have serious consequences.

Avalanche Discussion

The persistent slab avalanche problem takes time to heal. We haven’t had any loading in over a week and temperatures have worked in our favor. Recent observations, particularly in the Tetons, have shown a trend of increasing snowpack strength (higher ECT scores). This increase in strength has resulted from a week of high pressure, no loading and mild temperatures. It is becoming more unlikely to trigger a slab avalanche but it is still possible. Moving forward, there is a chance for more loading (snow) in the next week. As you ride or ski today, note the current snow surface. Facet development and surface hoar exists in many locations and could be problematic as it becomes loaded in the future.

Hidden obstacles remain a significant hazard due to the shallow snowpack. Ride with caution. Hitting a rock or stump at high speed can have serious consequences to your sled, skis or legs!
