In sintesi

Recent avalanche activity in the mountains is obvious, widespread and is the best telltale sign of instability. Some expected snow flurries, wind loading, and periods of low visibility may continue throughout the rest of the week. Continue to give avalanche terrain a wide berth especially in higher consequence, challenging and complex terrain.

Extra caution should still be exercised when venturing into SE-E-NE-N-NW aspects especially at ridge tops and wind effected terrain. Large wind slabs are still present and the possibility of triggering remains. Steady winds and snow flurries are forecasted for the next several days which means on going wind loading on unprotected slopes.  Ridges, gullies and topographic changes will be mostly affected by these on going winds. Stay aware of recent cornice formation, wind lips and pillowing.  Signs such as shooting cracks will be an indicator of instability.

Avalanche Discussion

Recent observations:

  • Copious snow amounts from the recent storms has made travel difficult.  Snow removal to access parking areas is still taking place. Please be patient and park respectfully. Highway 108 to People's Gate and BWRA parking area has not been plowed.  Act accordingly.
  • Large avalanches on leeward slopes near treeline and above treeline were widespread during this last storm cycle.
  • Ongoing storm conditions have prevented thorough visual 'hands on' observations in the BWRA the past several days above treeline. As clouds disperse look for recent signs of avalanches, while staying out of avalanche terrain.
  • With incoming storms predicted this weekend of the warmer variety.  Be extra cautious as the possibility of rain affects the current snow load.
