In sintesi

Triggering an avalanche is possible in steep, wind loaded terrain at the upper elevations. In addition, it remains possible to trigger a larger avalanche breaking on weak snow near the bottom of the snowpack. Watch for signs of instability such as cracking in the new snow and steer clear of steep slopes with weak, sugary snow near the ground.

    Soft slabs with depths up to 18 inches are possible in steep, wind loaded terrain at the upper elevations. The wind direction shifted from southwest to northwest last night and could have loaded/cross loaded a variety of terrain features. Several inches of new snow expected today, along with increasing wind speeds out of the west/northwest could make slabs more sensitive as the day progresses. Watch for, and steer clear of steep terrain with signs of loading including drifted pillows, cracking, and wind textured surfaces.

    Triggering an avalanche remains possible on weak snow buried 2-4 feet deep below hard slabs. This weak, sugary snow exists across all aspects and elevations near the base of the snowpack. The last known persistent slab avalanche occurred on 3/16 in Upper Deception Creek. These avalanches are difficult to predict, but areas where triggering is most probable include steep, rocky, and wind-affected slopes on the north half of the compass. These slopes contain thin, shallow spots where riders can more easily impact the weak layers. Continue to limit exposure underneath cornices. Cornice falls are the most likely way to trigger a very large persistent slab avalanche.

4-7” of snow fell overnight in the Togwotee forecast zone. This snowfall was accompanied by westerly winds with average speeds in the single digits and gusts up to 15 mph. An additional 1-3” are expected today with wind speeds increasing throughout the day. Soft slabs are likely to be confined to steep, loaded terrain along ridge lines. However, be on the lookout for signs of instability and identify terrain traps where a small avalanche could be consequential. Weak snow persists at the base of the snowpack and although it is getting more difficult, triggering a large avalanche on these layers is still possible. This is evident by a snowmobile triggered persistent slab avalanche that occurred only a week ago.

Temperatures dropped from near 30 to about 15 degF overnight at the upper elevations. This decrease, along with cooler forecasted temperatures today will make the wet avalanche activity that has been mentioned in the forecast recently unlikely.
